London, I

October 4, 2008

Hilary and I are back in London for a 2-week vacation. It’s strange being back here. I feel like I never left, but at the same time I feel like I am in some kind of parallel universe. I think it’s probably coming here from New York that makes London seem almost like the 6th borough that floated away years ago or something.

Flights were good, a little delay and some rough skies out of NYC, but the weather was awful so I don’t blame them. British Airways has a good track record with their food- I’ve had some really good stuff on their overseas flights. But not so good on this one. Not so good. Chicken things in sauce with other things.

Had a pasty at Hammersmith station (which is more or less the same, except for the addition of a West Cornwall Pasty Co.), felt very good about being where we were. A girl asked me where a KFC was outside of the station. My brain wondered why she would ask the guy with the giant suitcase that, but my mouth went, “Down there by the King’s Mall. Like 3 blocks past”. I’m suprised I still remember.

We slept most of the day yesterday, and only some of the day today, then went out and did stuff.

Had a pub meal. Oh god, how I missed pub grub. The pub we ate at was kind of touristy and not all as good as the ones we’ll be visiting this weekend, but it’s kind of like smoking any cigarette instead of no cigarette.

Went to the V&A, which was neat. Saw an interesting exhibit on the history and progression of fashion.

Had gelato at Hilary’s favorite gelateria near Leicester Square. Still delicious.

Walked along the waterfront- saw Big Ben up close, the Eye, etc.. It’s *freezing* here, by the way.

Tomorrow, trying to fit in a tour of Lord’s Cricket Ground, then off to Kent for a few days there.
